Softball heads to Saint Vincent

Waynesburg gets swept in DH by Bearcats

LATROBE, Pa. (April 24) – The Waynesburg University softball team traveled to Saint Vincent for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Monday. The Yellow Jackets were swept by the final scores of 8-1 and 2-1.

A crucial defensive miscue led to five unearned runs for Saint Vincent (18-12, 11-5) in the first inning of game one. The Bearcats added a run each in the third, fourth and sixth innings, respectively.

Waynesburg's (13-22-1, 6-10) lone run of the opener came in the sixth inning, when sophomore shortstop Keri Renzler grounded out with the bases loaded to bring in freshman third baseman Cheyenne Wasko.

Unlike the early contest, the Jackets stayed in contention for a win throughout the entirety of game two. Sophomore pitcher Courtney Messenger managed to keep the Saint Vincent bats in check over seven innings of work, and the defense allowed just one error in the late contest.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, sophomore first baseman Alex Lawrence singled in freshman second baseman Ashley Dubovich to cut the difference down to a single run. The visiting team had runners on first and third with two outs in the seventh, but a bit of bad luck halted the comeback try.

Dubovich appeared to have collected the game-tying base hit. Unfortunately, the rookie infielder was gunned out at first base by the Bearcat right fielder to end the contest.

Messenger took the loss in the circle during both ends of the twin-bill. She allowed a total of seven runs, two of which were earned, during eight innings of work.

Waynesburg wraps up its 2017 season on Saturday, when it hosts Washington & Jefferson for senior day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
