LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 1) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team opened its season on Friday at the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge. The Yellow Jackets got things going with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Pitt Greensburg, before falling 3-0 to La Roche.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1) took a 1-0 lead in its first match of the event with a 25-23 in set one. The Bobcats (0-2) bounced back with a 25-16 triumph in set two, but momentum swung back to Waynesburg thanks to a 25-17 win in set three. UPG kept the match going by downing the Orange and Black 25-17 to force a set five. The Jackets clinched the victory by a 15-10 final score.
Unfortunately, things didn't go as well in match two, as the Redhawks (1-1) swept the Jackets to close their day. Waynesburg fell by the set scores of 25-14, 25-17, 25-17.
The Jacket offense was paced by junior
Jordyn Wyllie, who tallied 20 kills over the split. Sophomore
Addie Barr chipped in 10 kills on the night. The freshman duo of
Olivia Zuchelli and
Alexis Phillips helped out the attack with 20 and 16 assists, respectively.
Waynesburg's defense was solid at the net, as the Jackets came up with 10 total blocks on the evening. Freshman
Hannah Colvin led the way with four total blocks, including a solo stuff. Speaking of defense, sophomore
Alyssa Proper piled up a team-best 28 digs over two matches.
The Jackets will play a pair of contests tomorrow at the Carey Center to finish their run at the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge. Waynesburg is scheduled to square off with Franciscan at 10 a.m. and Muskingum at 2 p.m.
