WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 23) – The Salem College women's soccer team made the trip to Waynesburg from North Carolina to face the Yellow Jackets. After a scoreless first half, the Spirits out-did the Jackets in the second half to pick up the win.
The Waynesburg (4-3-1) offense was held in check in the first half as it was only able to get five shots off, with two of them being on goal. However, sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Syfert made five saves and dealt with four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
The game remained scoreless until the 71
st minutes, when Salem (5-2). The Yellow Jackets needed just 22 seconds to answer the opening tally, when sophomore
Emma Gozzard scored her first goal of the season from 12 yards out. Sophomore
Brittany Woodcock got the assist on the equalizer.
Unfortunately, the Spirits answered six minutes later off a corner kick. Salem weathered a few late charges from the Yellow Jackets to hold on for the win.
Waynesburg was out shot 21-7 on the day, with the shots on goal being in favor of the Spirits by a 13-3 margin. Syfert made a season-high 11 saves on the afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets will return to the pitch on Friday, September 29, in their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener on the road against the Saint Vincent Bearcats. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
