STEUBENVILLE, Ohio. (Sept. 5) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team built a 2-0 lead in the second half of Tuesday's match at Franciscan and looked poised for victory. Unfortunately, the Barons had different plans and stormed back over the final 34-plus minutes to pull out a 3-2 win.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1-1) opened the scoring in the 23
rd minute when freshman
Thomas Drake scored his second goal of the young season. Fellow rookie
Cam Sutherland logged his second assist of the year to set up the tally.
Goal number two was of the unassisted variety and came from sophomore
Nate Kummer in the 49
th minute of action. Franciscan (2-0) began its comeback shortly after the Kummer tally in the 55
th minute of play with its first goal of the day.
The Barons tied the score at 2-2 in the 65
th minute of action on, before getting the eventual game winner 12 minutes later. Waynesburg had one last chance to tie the game back up and send it to overtime when it set up for a corner kick with 15 seconds left to play. Unfortunately, the Orange and Black couldn't cash in the opportunity and suffered its first loss of 2017.
Junior goalkeeper
James Snyder suffered the loss in net after stopping eight-of-11 shots on net. The Jackets held slim edges in total shots (23-18), shots on goal (13-11) and corner kicks (6-4).
Waynesburg is back in action on Friday, Sept. 15, when it makes its home debut against Mount Aloysius. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
