WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 6) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team held its 2017 home opener on Wednesday night at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Yellow Jackets recorded their second-straight victory by shutting out Marietta 2-0.
Waynesburg (2-1) was led by a pair of veteran standouts in its latest victory. Senior
Melanie Byler recorded her second goal of the season in the 16
th minute of play to provide the game-winning score. Another senior,
Nikki Davis logged her second goal of the fall to provide a measure of insurance. Appropriately, a third senior,
Sam Nichols, earned the assist on the score, which came in the 48
th minute of play.
The Jacket offense held sizable advantages in total shots (17-8) and shots on goal (10-5). That offensive onslaught was more than enough support for senior goalkeeper
Heather Fraser, who recorded her first shutout of the season. Fraser turned away all five shots that were put on goal by the Pioneers (1-1-1).
Waynesburg plays its second of six-straight home games on Tuesday, Sept. 12, when La Roche comes to town. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
