Series Breakdown
All-Time Series: Westminster leads 39-33-3
First Meeting: 1910 (Westminster won 17-0)
Last Meeting: 2016 (Westminster won 28-7)
Â
Saturday marks the 76
th meeting in the Waynesburg/Westminster rivalry. The Titans are the Yellow Jackets' second-most familiar opponent. The Jackets have met up with Geneva 80 times. Not surprisingly, all three teams are former members of the NAIA.
Â
After losing its top three wide receivers from last year, Waynesburg had to get creative when it came to filling out its depth chart at that position. Last week, junior
Jake Dougherty and sophomore
Aaron Jenkins, both of which started at quarterback in 2016, and
Christian Breisinger, a former two-year starter at safety, all made their collegiate debuts at wide out. Jenkins had two catches for a team-high 55 yards, while Dougherty snared a squad-best three balls for 20 yards. Â
Â
Junior
Austin Wilson made his return to the field last week after missing all of 2016 with an injury. The 6-0, 210-pounder led Waynesburg with 28 yards on 10 carries in the 19-0 loss at Muskingum.
Â
The Jacket defense didn't allow a point to Muskingum in week one until the final seconds of the second quarter. A big reason for the unit's outstanding start was the player of a trio of double-digit tacklers. Senior linebacker
Brent Blacharczyk piled up 13 tackles, while junior linebacker
John-Glen Davis and sophomore defensive back
VaShon Graham added 11 and 10 total stops, respectively. All three of those totals were among the top-13 spots in the PAC.
Â
Prior to last week's 20-16 loss to Wittenberg, Westminster was receiving votes for the D3Football.com national top 25 rankings. Despite battling the 16
th-ranked Tigers over 60 minutes, the Titans were dropped completely out of the "receiving votes" section.
Â
The Titan defense showed just how stingy it could be in week one. In 2016, Wittenberg was held under 21 points just once: a 37-9 loss to national powerhouse Wisconsin-Whitewater during the second round of the NCAA National Championship Tournament.
Â
Westminster's senior class, which includes 11 of its 22 starters on offense and defense, has helped the Titans compile a 21-12 overall record, including a 2-1 mark against Waynesburg.
