BETHANY, W.Va. (Jan. 20) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team found itself in a tooth-and-nail struggle with Bethany during Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets battled tooth-and-nail with the Bison, but a last-second three pointer missed its mark as Waynesburg dropped a 66-63 final score to the host team.
The loss ended the Jackets' (10-7, 6-4) five-game road winning streak, despite senior forward
Addy Knetzer's eighth double-double of the season. The veteran standout set team highs in both points (24) and rebounds (12) for Waynesburg. Senior
Mackenna Drazich just missed out on a double-double of her own with 12 points and nine boards.
Bethany (8-9, 5-5) opened up a 12-4 lead over the first 2:35 of the game and found itself ahead 20-13 after the first quarter. The Bison led for nearly the entire afternoon, but Waynesburg battled for 40 minutes against the Green and White.
The Jackets began to turn things around in the third quarter. After finding itself in a six-point halftime hole (35-29), Waynesburg fired back with a 17-11 run to tie the score with 2:33 showing on the third-quarter clock. A three-pointer by Drazich knotted things up at 46-46, and from that point on, the score differential never swelled past six points.
The Jackets finally pulled ahead of Bethany 15 seconds into the fourth quarter thanks to a pair of free throws from junior point guard
Monica Starre. The Bison answered with a layup on their next possession and never trailed for the remainder of the fourth quarter.
Waynesburg kept things close down the stretch and got possession of the basketball following a missed Bethany free throw with nine seconds left in the game. Unfortunately, Drazich's bid for an overtime-forcing trey didn't find the twine and the game came to a close.
The Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to travel to Grove City to face the Wolverines. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
