GROVE CITY, Pa. (Jan. 24) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hit the road on Wednesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown at Grove City. Shooting struggles from the floor, especially in the third quarter, played a big role in the Yellow Jackets falling 61-49 to the Wolverines.
Waynesburg (10-8, 6-5) trailed by just one point (34-33) at halftime but managed just one field goal over the first 10 minutes following the break, allowing Grove City (12-6, 7-4) to build a 47-38 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The home team finished off the victory by outscoring the Orange and Black 14-11.
Though it came in a losing effort, senior guard
Rachel Eng set a new personal collegiate best by pouring in a game-high 17 points on seven-of-12 shooting from the floor. Junior guard
Julie Deklaven connected on all three of her field goal tries, as well as three-of-five foul shots, to record a 10-point night.
Waynesburg shot 17-of-51 from the floor (33.3 percent), with five of those makes coming from three-point range. The Jackets' three-point defense was one of their biggest highlights of the night, holding Grove City to just two makes in nine attempts from long range.
The Jackets end a stretch of three-straight road games Saturday with a trip to Thiel. Tipoff with the Tomcats is scheduled for 1 p.m.
