NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 6) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team continued its recent run of success by winning its fourth-straight game and sixth out of its last seven by beating Westminster 80-61 on Saturday.
Things started slowly for the Yellow Jackets (9-4, 5-1), who found themselves in an 18-11 hole after the first quarter. The visitors managed to move on from a less-than-successful first 10 minutes and went to work in cutting into the deficit. A three-pointer by junior guard
Anna Bartman put Waynesburg ahead 24-21.
After the Titans (3-9, 0-6) tied the game back up at 24-24 in the ensuing possession, junior point guard
Monica Starre dropped in a go-ahead layup to make the score 26-24. From that point on, Waynesburg never trailed in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown and ended the quarter on a 14-3 run that brought about a 38-27 halftime lead.
The Jackets carried their momentum into the second half, which they won 42-34. The victory, combined with a Saint Vincent loss, gave Waynesburg sole possession of third place in the PAC standings. The trip to Westminster ended a five-game stretch of road contests for the Jackets.
Bartman led all scorers in the contest with a career-high 21 points, going six-for-nine from three-point range and three-for-four from the charity stripe. Senior
Addy Knetzer added her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Fellow senior
Mackenna Drazich added 16 points with eight rebounds. Senior
Rachel Eng and sophomore
Erin Joyce chipped in 10 points each. Eng finished the game with 10 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games.
Waynesburg outshot Westminster 40 percent to 34 percent from the field. The benches proved vital to the game, with the Jackets out-scoring the Titans 35-25.
Waynesburg returns home to face defending PAC champion Thomas More on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
