WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 10) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team braved the rain at John F. Wiley Stadium for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game against Bethany. After battling the Bison and rain for 90 minutes, the Yellow Jackets came out on top in a 3-1 contest.
Waynesburg (6-3-2, 2-1) opened the scoring in the 19
th minute when sophomore
Jill Moyer scored from eight yards out off an assist from senior
Natalie Fortna. That helper was just the beginning of a big night from the veteran.
Fortna tallied the eventual game-winning goal during the 37
th minute of play by burying a loose ball in the goalie box to make the score 2-0. After halftime, Fortna struck again, this time in the 69
th minute off a corner kick from junior
Hannah Sembower.
Waynesburg looked to be in line for a shutout victory, but the Bison (3-9, 0-4) unleased a kick from 30 yards out that managed to slip past the Jacket resistance. The goal was scored with just 34 seconds showing on the game clock.
The Jackets unleashed a 34-shot barrage on the visiting team, 14 of which were on goal. Waynesburg practically lived on the corner flags, attempting 17 corner kicks on the evening. That offensive onslaught was more than enough support for junior goalkeeper
Courtney Syfert, who picked up her sixth win of the year by making three saves.
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Greenville, Pennsylvania, to face Thiel. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
