Series Breakdown
All-Time Series: Waynesburg (32-18-5)
First Meeting: 1903 (Waynesburg 17-5)
Last Meeting: 2017 (Grove City 21-14)
Â
The last three meetings between Waynesburg and Grove City have been closely contested battles. Prior to last year's 21-14 Wolverine win, the Yellow Jackets scored a 14-10 triumph in 2016 and edged the Red and White 35-31 in 2015.
Â
Prior to last year's loss, Waynesburg enjoyed a seven-game winning streak when facing Grove City. Included in that stretch were back-to-back shutouts in 2013 and 2014.
Â
Very quietly, Waynesburg has not only become one of the top defenses in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), but also in all of Division III. The Yellow Jackets boast the top total defense (278.2 yards per game) and the number-three scoring defense (21.5 points per game) in the conference. The Jackets have given up the 31
st-fewest yards per contest in D III.
Â
Waynesburg's biggest strength on defense is against the pass game. The Jackets have given up 157.2 yards per contest through the air, the second-best mark in the league. The Orange and Black has also given up the fewest first downs of any PAC team (13.5 per game) and sports the third-best percentage in terms of third down conversion (36.1 percent).
Â
Few players are more important to their offense than GCC junior running back Wesley Schools. Schools ranks second in the PAC in rushing yards per game (140.2) and has scored seven of his team's 18 touchdowns. He ranks seventh overall in terms of total offense per game and second among non-quarterbacks.
Â
Grove City also boasts one of the top wide receivers in the league to go along with Schools in sophomore Cody Gustafson. His 38 catches are the second-most in the PAC, while his 510 yards are also second best in the conference. Gustafson has pulled in seven touchdown receptions on the season, more than all Waynesburg ball catchers combined (five).
Â
No two teams in the league are better at controlling the football than Grove City and Waynesburg, which rank one-two in that category. The Wolverines maintain possession for an average of 34:24 per game, while the Jackets are doing so at an even 33 minutes per game.
Â
Saturday's conference clash will feature a meeting of the two least tenured coaches in the PAC in Grove City's Andrew DiDonato (third year) and Waynesburg's
Chris Smithley (second year). Ironically, both already hold win this year over Carnegie Mellon's Rich Lackner, who is the longest tenured coach in the PAC (33 years).
