WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 13) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team hosted Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Chatham on Saturday afternoon. A Yellow Jacket comeback from 2-0 down came up short in a 2-1 setback to the visiting Cougars.
Chatham (6-17, 2-10) won 10 of the first 11 points in the opening set. Waynesburg (4-20, 0-12) tried to mount a comeback, but could not get the deficit smaller than four points and lost the set 25-17. In the second, the Jackets found themselves in a small hole but climbed back and got within one-point. The Cougars, however, ended any chance of Waynesburg taking the lead and won the second, 25-19.
Set number three started the same as the previous two, as Chatham took the early lead. However, Waynesburg did something that it had not done all day, take the lead away from the Cougars. With a 16-14 lead and earning serve, junior
Alyssa Proper went to work as the Jackets won eight-straight serves points. Waynesburg capped off the set with a kill by senior
Jordyn Wyllie and won 25-15.
The fourth set started like all the others with an early Chatham lead. The Jackets battled back to bring the score with two on multiple occasions. The Cougars never allowed it to get any closer and won the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
Senior
Lexy Waldman led Waynesburg's offense with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .268. Junior
Olivia Zuchelli set the match high with 43 assists on the afternoon. Defensively, senior
Cassidy Guiser paced both teams with match-high 30 digs which is the highest of her collegiate career.
Waynesburg travels to Washington, Pennsylvania for its next match on Tuesday, October 16, against the Washington and Jefferson Presidents. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
