WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 3) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team hosted Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Saint Vincent College on Wednesday night. The Jackets pushed the Bearcats to the brink, but the visiting team pulled out a 3-2 win at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Waynesburg (3-17, 0-9) found itself in an 11-8 hole in the first set, but battled back on the service of freshman
Mallory Stopko and claimed a 14-11 lead. Saint Vincent (8-10, 4-4) tried to retake the lead, but every time it got within one point of tying the score, the Jackets ended the attack and won the set 25-23.
In set two and three, the Bearcats jumped out to early leads. After falling behind 17-10, Waynesburg tried to battle back, but could never close the gap closer than four points and dropped the second set 25-18. In the third set, Waynesburg trailed 13-11 but Saint Vincent went on an 11-1 run and opened a 24-12 lead. The Jackets added two more points before the Bearcats took the set 25-14.
Down two sets to one, Waynesburg faced a must-win fourth set and the team came out firing. The Jackets built leads of 11-4 and 16-7 before forcing a fifth set with a 25-13 win.
With the deciding game tied at nine all, Saint Vincent went on a five-point run to take the 14-9 lead. Waynesburg responded with two points of its own to stay alive, but ultimately fell short and dropped the fifth set 15-11.
Senior
Jordyn Wyllie led the charge for the Yellow Jackets with match-high 16 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Hannah Colvin also hit for .333 with 12 kills. Junior
Olivia Zuchelli led the match and set a season and career-high in assists with 45. Defensively, senior
Cassidy Guiser paced the Jackets with a match-high 18 digs.
Waynesburg returns to the court on Friday, Oct. 5, for a non-conference home matchup against the La Roche College Redhawks. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
