SANDUSKY, Ohio (Dec. 15) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team saw its final action of the 2018 calendar year on Saturday when it took part in the Kalahari Duals, which were hosted by Heidelberg. The Yellow Jackets went 1-3 on the day.
The Yellow Jackets (5-7) got the day off to a good start by doubling up former Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Thomas More (5-7). The Orange and Black followed with a 32-9 loss to Heidelberg (7-2), a 38-15 defeat at the hands of sixth-ranked Mount Union (10-0) and a 32-15 setback at the hands of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
As they have done all season, junior 197-pounder
Ken Burrs (Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) and senior heavyweight
Jake Evans (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth-Forward) led the charge for the Orange and Black.
Burrs posted a 2-1 record on the day with his second win over a top-10 ranked opponent in a week. The two-time PAC champion looked strong in a 12-6 victory over seventh-ranked Tyler Hammack of Heidelberg. He nearly scored another victory over a ranked opponent, but came up just short in a 9-7 decision against Oshkosh's ninth-ranked Beau Yineman. Burrs had a shot at another national recognized opponent in Thomas More's James Caniglia. However, the Saints decided to take a forfeit rather than send Caniglia to the mat.
Evans was perhaps the most dominant competitor in the seven-team field. The number-one ranked and returning national champion at 285 pounds went 4-0 with all four victories coming by pin, three of which occurred in the first period.
Junior 157-pounder
Zach Mackall (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) added a 2-2 performance with a pair of pins, while junior 174-pounder
Dan Verhovsek (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) went 2-1 with a victory by fall.
Sophomore
Dillion Charlton (Stoystown, Pa. / North Star), posted a perfect 3-0 mark at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center with two forfeits and a decision. Sophomore
Michael Mahon (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) bumped up to 197 pounds to score a pin against Mount Union.
As previously mentioned, Waynesburg won't return to the mats until 2019 for its eighth annual invitational. Start time is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
