WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 31) – The Waynesburg University women 's basketball team welcomed Saint Vincent to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets found itself in a big halftime hole, but fired back to make a game of it, before eventually falling 71-68 to the Bearcats.
Saint Vincent (13-7, 10-3) edged the Jackets 17-13 in the first quarter, before using a big second quarter to take a 40-24 advantage into the third quarter. Things turned around for Waynesburg in the second half, as it outscored the visiting team 20-8 to make the score 48-44 heading to the fourth.
After falling behind 57-51 midway through the quarter, an old-fashioned three-point play by senior forward
Addy Knetzer trimmed Waynesburg's deficit to just three at 57-54. The Bearcats built its lead back up to 10 points, but the Orange and Black refused to go away and a three-pointer by senior
Mackenna Drazich pulled the Jackets to one basket (70-68) with 24 seconds showing on the clock.
Unfortunately, the home team was unable to get off a potential game-tying shot and Saint Vincent knocked down a free throw with eight seconds left to bring about the final score. Waynesburg's second-half comeback was fueled by 20 minutes of hot shooting that resulted in a 70 percent effort from the field over the final two quarters of action.
Even though it didn't result in a win, Knetzer set a new team season high with a game-best 30 points on 13-of-18 shooting. She just missed out a double-double by yanking down nine rebounds.
Drazich racked up 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists over a productive 36 minutes. Senior
Rachel Eng chipped in 13 points and five assists, while junior point guard
Monica Starre set game highs in both rebounds (11) and assists (7).
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, with a home game against Westminster. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
