WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 17) – After being honored prior to tipoff, this year's senior class led ,the Waynesburg University women's basketball team to an 82-62 win over Geneva on Saturday. The victory locked the Yellow Jackets into the fifth seed for the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs.
"I was really happy with our effort on both ends," said Waynesburg head coach
Sam Jones. "We were not perfect on defense, but had a more concentrated focus on the details."
Waynesburg (14-11, 10-8) was in a tight contest with the Golden Tornadoes (8-17, 5-13) after the first half as the Jackets held a 39-32 lead. However, the home team opened the third quarter on a 17-7 run and after the third set of 10 minutes had ticked away, the home team led by 58-43. The fourth quarter, also belonged to Waynesburg, as it poured in 24 points to close out the 20-point triumph.
Each of the Jackets' five starters scored in double-digits and were led by senior forward
Addy Knetzer. She dropped in 21 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Junior point guard
Monica Starre added 13 points of her own and pulled down a game-high eight boards.
Seniors
Rachel Eng and
Mackenna Drazich both tallied 11 points and three steals. Eng led the Jackets with three blocks. Sophomore
Erin Joyce rounded out the starting five with 10 points and a game-high seven assists on the afternoon.
Waynesburg outrebounded Geneva by 19 (49-30). The Yellow Jackets also scored 18 second chance points compared to 11 for the Golden Tornadoes.
"I love when we win the battle of the boards," Jones said. "It was a great way to end the regular season and honor our seniors, now on to the playoffs."
Waynesburg, who is the fifth seed, will host the eighth seeded Westminster Titans on Monday, Feb.19, for the first round of the 2018 PAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
