WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 19) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Westminster in a first round game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) women's basketball tournament. After getting off to a bit of a slow start, the Yellow Jackets unleashed a three-point attack that allowed them to defeat the Titans and pick up an 86-71 win and advance in the tournament.
Westminster (7-19) got off to a strong start at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse and led 16-10 with less than a minute to play in the first quarter. However, freshman
Andrea Orlosky managed to beat the buzzer on a three-pointer that cut the deficit to just three before heading to period number two.
That trey was the first of four-consecutive makes from long range that turned a six-point Jacket (15-11) deficit into a six-point lead (19-13). That outburst proved to be the turning point in the contest, as the home team never trailed from that point forward for the remainder of the evening.
The Jackets built leads as large as 19 points on multiple occasions. As previously mentioned, they did most of their damage from beyond the three-point arc, knocking down 14-of-27 from long range. Sophomore
Erin Joyce led the charge with five successful attempts in eight tries. Joyce tied for the team lead with 17 points.
Senior
Rachel Eng was an impressive eight-of-nine from the floor and collected 17 points. Another senior,
Mackenna Drazich, chipped in 15 points, 12 of which came from four three-pointers out of seven tries. Orlosky was Waynesburg's fourth double-digit scorer on the night, going for 12 points off the bench.
Junior
Monica Starre pieced together some impressive all-around numbers in the win. While she only scored six points against Westminster, she dished out a game-high 10 assists and tied for the game lead with eight rebounds.
Speaking of rebounds, Waynesburg held a 40-30 edge on the glass. The Jacket passing was also on point, as it resulted in 25 assists on 30 made field goals.
""I was really excited with our energy and focus. We won the battle of the boards and had great ball movement on offense," said Waynesburg head coach
Sam Jones. "We took care of the ball in the second half and shot extremely well tonight. My favorite statistic is 25 assists on 30 made shots. It was a great team win with contributions from everyone."
The Jackets will travel to Grove City on Wednesday for the quarterfinals of the PAC tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
