CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (March 23) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Thomas More to open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition on Friday. The Yellow Jackets were swept by the Saints on a cold day in Kentucky.
Waynesburg (4-10, 0-2) gave Thomas More (4-7, 2-0) a tough fight in the opener, which ultimately went 3-2 to the home team. Game two saw the Saints pick up a 9-0 triumph.
Thomas More opened the day's scoring with a run in the bottom of the third inning, but Waynesburg answered back quickly with a two-spot in the top of the fourth. Sophomore right fielder
Brenden Kohan gave the Yellow Jackets the lead with a two-run homer to left-center that also plated junior third baseman
Alec Fantaskey.
Unfortunately, the Jacket advantage lasted just an inning and a half as Thomas More tallied the game-tying and game-clinching runs in the bottom of the fifth. The rest of the opener belonged to the pitching staffs, as neither conference opponent was able to score for the remainder of the nine-inning contest.
Sophomore
Mason Miller got the start on the mound and suffered the loss after allowing all three runs on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings of work. He logged a game-high five strikeouts. Juniors
Brandon Lawless and
Nate Gearhart combined for 3.1 no-hit, scoreless innings of relief.
Junior second baseman
Tyler Reis led the Jackets at the plate with a pair of base hits. Freshman
Tyler Srbinovich and sophomore
Jordan Kowalski both doubled in the loss.
The Saints scored all the runs they needed for a game-two triumph in the opening frame by pushing a pair of runners across home plate. The host squad out-hit Waynesburg 17-to-seven in the late contest.
Sophomore
Jonny Kutchman started and took the loss on the bump by giving up three runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits and a walk over two frames. He was the first of four Jackets to log innings in game two.
Sophomore shortstop
Vinny Monico collected two singles and reached base a third time when he was hit by a pitch. Sophomore catcher
Tyler Reyes doubled in the loss.
The Jackets return home for a non-PAC doubleheader against Penn State Behrend on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
