WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 25) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hosted Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets dropped both ends of the twin-bill to the Lions.
Behrend (7-6) took game one 9-1 and followed that up with 14-5 victory over the Jackets (4-12) in the late contest. Despite the final outcomes, Waynesburg jumped out to early leads in both losses.
A wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning of game one allowed junior centerfielder
Mitch Nordstrom to spring home with the first run of the day. Unfortunately, two runs in the second frame gave Behrend all the offense it needed to take game one.
Freshman catcher
Chris Lee connected on two of Waynesburg's four hits on the opener. Freshman
Tyler Srbinovich got the start and allowed five runs on nine hits over five innings of work. He struck out three and didn't issue a walk.
The Lions opened the scoring in game two with a tally in the top of the second. The Jackets took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning thanks to RBI singles by Nordstrom and junior
Jaret Berardinelli. Behrend took control of the contest with two runs in the third, one more in the fourth and a game-deciding seven in the fifth.
Nordstrom, Lee and sophomore
Justin Buberl collected two hits each in game two. Nordstrom and Buberl both doubled in the loss.
Freshman
Zach Straub suffered the pitching loss after yielding four runs, all earned, on four hits and a walk. He was the first of five Waynesburg pitches to log innings in the evening.
Waynesburg returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition on Saturday, March 31, when it hosts Bethany for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
