WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball team continued its run at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Thursday with a doubleheader against Mitchell. The Yellow Jackets held leads in the latter part of both contests, but big innings for the Mariners led to a pair of defeats for the Orange and Black.
The Jackets (4-4) led 6-5 after five innings in game one, but a seven-run sixth inning followed by a six-run seventh led to an 18-6 win for Mitchell (7-1). It was a similar story in game two, where Waynesburg held a 5-3 edge going into the bottom of the fifth. The Mariners fired back with 11 combined runs in the fifth and the sixth to take the contest 14-6.
Junior
Ty Wickline took the loss on the mound in game one after allowing five runs, four of which were earned in one inning of play. He was one of six pitchers used in the loss, including sophomore starter
Jonny Kutchman, who had to leave after facing just one batter and getting drilled in the leg by a hard-hit ball.
Sophomore
Mason Miller suffered defeat in the late contest. He gave up 10 runs, eight of which were earned, on six hits, five walks and four hit batsmen over 4.2 innings.
Though it didn't lead to a victory, junior
Tyler Reis had a huge day at the plate. He went five-for eight with a homerun, three doubles, four RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore
Justin Buberl collected four hits in seven at-bats, drove in a run and scored three more.
Waynesburg wraps up its spring trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Muhlenberg. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
