BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (April 21) – The Waynesburg University softball team bounced back from a loss in game one of Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Geneva to earn a split with the Golden Tornadoes. The Golden Tornadoes took the opener 7-4, but fell 4-3 to the Jackets in game two.

Waynesburg (12-14, 5-7) opened the scoring in game one when an error allowed sophomore centerfielder
Courtney Syfert to reach home. Geneva (13-15, 5-9) rebounded in a big way, scoring five of its seven runs in the bottom of the opening frame.

Junior first baseman
Alex Lawrence cut into the lead with a solo homerun in the third. A fifth-inning RBI single by junior shortstop
Keri Renzler pulled the visiting team to within just two runs at 5-3, but a two-spot put up by the GT's in the fifth put the contest well out of reach. Waynesburg scored its final run on another Geneva error in the seventh.

Waynesburg salvaged the split despite producing just three hits in game two. The opportunistic Yellow Jackets took advantage of three Geneva walks and an error to create just enough offense for victory.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Renzler lifted a sacrifice fly into left field to tie the score in the second frame. The next batter, freshman right fielder
Marlee Ott, reached base via error and allowed sophomore second baseman
Ashley Dubovich to sprint home with a go-ahead score.

A run in the fifth and another in the sixth put the Golden Tornadoes ahead 3-2 heading into the seventh-and-final inning. The Waynesburg bats woke up in a big way during their final three outs of the day.

With two outs already on the board, Renzler drew a walk and sophomore
Cheyenne Wasko came up big with a pinch-hit RBI double that tied the score at 3-3. Syfert followed immediately after by driving home Wasko with a triple that gave her team the game-deciding score.

Junior
Courtney Messenger started both games and worked all 13 innings in the circle. After a grueling day on the diamond, Messenger's record stands at 10-6.

Renzler paced the Waynesburg offense by going three-for-five with a run scored and two RBI. Lawrence, Wasko and Syfert chipped in two hits each over the split.

The Jackets are scheduled to be back on the diamond on Monday, April 23, when they travel to Grove City for a crucial PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
