GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 23) – The Waynesburg University softball team traveled to Grove City to play a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games with the Wolverines. The Yellow Jackets fell 12-2 in the opener, before dropping a 5-2 decision in the late contest.
Waynesburg (12-16, 5-9) took early leads in both games, but yielded big frames to the Wolverines (6-16, 4-10) that played major roles in the final outcomes.
Sophomore
Rachel Skon got the Jackets on the board in game one with an RBI single that scored junior leftfielder
Cat Allstatt in the top of the first inning. After Grove City grabbed a 2-1 edge in the bottom of the third, Waynesburg tied the contest back up with a single from freshman
Christina Baker that plated sophomore
Cheyenne Wasko.
GCC took control of the opener with a five-run fourth inning. Two of those tallies were of the unearned variety. A three-run fifth brought the game to its early conclusion.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, the Jackets built their first multi-run lead of the day after plating two runs in the second. Junior shortstop
Keri Renzler singled home freshman pinch-runner
Sara Knisely to open the scoring. Renzler eventually came around to score run number two on a wild pitch.
Grove City cut the lead in half with a tally in the bottom of the second and evened things up in the fourth. The Wolverines produced the game-deciding runs in the sixth, the last of which was unearned. Waynesburg had a chance to cut into its deficit over the final three innings, but stranded four runners over that stretch.
The Jackets will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday when they head to Washington & Jefferson for their final PAC road trip of the season. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled to be thrown at 3:30 p.m.
