WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 23) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team hosted Geneva for a warm, sunny Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match on Wednesday. The match came down to the final two singles flights on the courts that both went to the Golden Tornadoes, who scored a 6-3 victory.
Geneva (13-4, 4-4) took an early 2-1 lead following doubles competition. Waynesburg's (6-9, 2-6) number-one duo of juniors
Jonah Cooper and
Josh Denham got the match off to a strong start for the home team with an 8-5 win.
Trailing 2-1 heading to singles competition, the two conference rivals split the first four flights to come off the court. Cooper locked down a 6-2, 6-4 win at the number-one spot, while senior
Adam McKnight also won in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) at the fourth spot. The Golden Tornadoes took flights five and six.
The match was ultimately determined in the second and third spots, both of which went to tiebreakers. Unfortunately, both went the way of the Gold and Black, including a marathon battle at the number-three spot. After splitting the first two sets, Jacket senior Andrew Brunette lost in heart-breaking fashion after a grueling 20-18 tiebreaker.
Waynesburg is scheduled to return to the courts on Wednesday with a road match at Penn State Altoona. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
