CRESSON, Pa. (Sept. 15) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team hit the road on Saturday for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup at Mount Aloysius. The Yellow Jackets stood firm against a constant Mounty attack and got two first-half goals in a 2-2 double-overtime draw.
Waynesburg (4-1-1) ended Mount Aloysius's (6-0-1) season-long six-game winning streak that included victories over PAC opponents Geneva, Thiel, Saint Vincent and Bethany. It was the Mounties' fifth-straight game against PAC opposition.
The home team got off to a fast start, scoring just two minutes into the contest. However, the Jackets didn't wait long to respond, as sophomore
Emily Hill scored her team-leading third goal of 2018. The tally was set up by junior
Teagan Jenner, who picked up the assist on a free kick.
Mount Aloysius retook a one-goal edge at the end of the 19
th minute, but, once again, the Jackets had an answer. Sophomore
Maddy Manz posted the game's final point from 18 yards out for her first score of the year in the 30
th minute.
Neither team found the back of the net over the final 60 minutes of regulation, sending the game into overtime. After out-shooting Waynesburg 18-4 in regulation, the Mounties were held much more closely in check in overtime, holding just a slim 3-1 advantage in shots over the final 20 minutes of the contest. None of the attempts were put on net.
Junior goalkeeper
Courtney Syfert played perhaps the biggest role in preserving the tie by making six saves on the day, including five in the second half. Mount Aloysius outshot Waynesburg 13-1 in that second 45-minute period.
Hill attempted three of the Jackets' five total shots. The Jackets scored on their only two shots on goal.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 19, with a rare afternoon weekday game. The Jackets face off with Pitt Greensburg at 2 p.m.
