Women's soccer downs Hilbert 3-0

Jackets log second-straight shutout of the weekend

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Sept. 1) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team wrapped up its trip to New York as the Yellow Jackets took on Hilbert as part of the Spartan Classic, which was hosted by D'Youville. The Yellow Jackets scored early on and never looked back on their way to a 3-0 victory over the Hawks.

Waynesburg University (2-0) opened the scoring in the fifth minute when sophomore forward Jill Moyer scored her first goal of the season. From there, the Yellow Jacket defense shut down Hilbert (0-2) not allowing a single shot over the remainder of the opening half. Waynesburg, tallied seven shots in that same period and took it's 1-0 edge into period number two.

The Yellow Jackets continued the dominance in the second half by scoring twice. The first goal was scored by sophomore forward Emily Hill when she buried a cross from sophomore midfielder Maddy Manz. Three minutes later, freshman forward Leesha Wagner connected from long distance outside the box.

Offensively, Waynesburg added seven more shots and finished with 14 on the night, as eight of those ended up on net. The Jackets also executed 10 corner kicks, while Hilbert had no attempts from the corner. Hilbert got two shots, both on goal, that were stopped by junior goalkeeper Courtney Syfert.

After posting her second-straight shutout in as many days, Syfert was named to the all-tournament team. Speaking of defensive standouts, sophomore defender Jessica Silbaugh also earned a spot on the all-tournament squad.

The Yellow Jackets return to the confines of John F. Wiley Stadium for the home opener against Marietta. First kick is slated for 6 p.m.
