Men's tennis opens season with a win

Jackets down Muskingum 8-1

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 22) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team opened its 2018-19 schedule on Saturday by hosting Muskingum in a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match. The Yellow Jackets prevailed by an 8-1 final score.

Waynesburg (1-0) opened its day by sweeping the three doubles flights. Seniors Jonah Cooper and Josh Denham rolled to an 8-2 win at the number-one spot, while the freshman pair of Joe English and Connor Cassidy blanked the opposition 8-0 at second doubles. Senior Brian Drake and junior Tanner McKnight had a much tougher time on the court than Waynesburg's first two duos. However, they were able to hold on to pull out a 7-7 (8-5) victory at third doubles.

The wins kept coming for the Jackets in singles play. Cooper, Denham and McKnight all won in straight sets at first, second and sixth singles, respectively. Cassidy and Drake went to three sets for their victories at the number-four and number-five positions, respectively.

Waynesburg is off until Wednesday, Sept. 26, when it hosts Geneva. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
