WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 7) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team opened the home portion of its 2018 schedule on Friday evening against Mount Aloysius. The Yellow Jackets fell in straight sets, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-23.
In the first set, Waynesburg (1-6) grabbed the first two points, but then traded scores back-and- forth with the Mounties (1-5) for the remainder of the set. Trailing 23-18, the Yellow Jackets went on a four-point rally to cut the deficit to a single point. However, Mount Aloysius was able to hold on and win the set 25-22.
The following set it was all Mount Aloysius, as the Mounties took the first two points and never looked back with a 25-15 victory. The third set was very similar to the first as both teams traded pairs of points until the end. Waynesburg battled back from a 20-17 hole to take the 22-20 lead. The Mounties rebounded the with three-straight points to grab a 23-22 edge. The Yellow Jackets tied it at 23, but the Mounties took the final two points to close the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
The Waynesburg offense was paced by senior
Jordyn Wyllie, who logged a match-high 10 kills with a hitting percentage of .500. Sophomore
Hannah Colvin and freshman
Cam Shaffer defended the net with three blocks each. Junior
Alyssa Proper led the Jackets with 14 assists and senior
Cassidy Guiser totaled nine digs.
Waynesburg returns to the court tomorrow when it hosts a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tri-match against the Bethany Bison and the Washington & Jefferson Presidents. The first contest of the day will feature the Yellow Jackets against the Bison. Start time is slated for 11 a.m.
