Jacket women fall in OT at Bethany

Yellow Jackets drop 3-2 final to Bison

BETHANY, W.Va. (Oct. 12) – Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) women's soccer match between Waynesburg and Bethany featured a memorably quick and dramatic turnaround that saw the Bison pull out a 3-2 victory in double-overtime.

For nearly 72 minutes, Waynesburg (2-9-1, 0-2-1) looked primed to pick up its first PAC win of the season. After peppering Bethany (1-9-1, 1-1) with shots throughout the game, the visiting team finally broke through for the first goal of the morning, which came late in the 71st minute. Senior Christina Golonka (Burgettstown, Pa. / Madonna) tallied her first of two scores in the contest. She was set up by sophomore Meghan Briski (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) for the game's opening tally.

After not attempting a shot on goal for almost 76 minutes, the Bison tied the game on its first attempt, which came late in the 75th minute.

The scoring didn't slow down, as Waynesburg looked like it picked up a potential game-winning goal in the 85th minute. Golonka beat the opposing keeper for a second time in in roughly 13 minutes. The unassisted tally made the score 2-1 with just 4:11 remaining in the second half.

Amazingly, the Bison did it again, scoring its second goal in as many shots on net with just 12 seconds left in regulation time. After the game went into extra time, Waynesburg outshot the opposition 2-0 in the first overtime, but was unable to ring up a golden goal.

Waynesburg made it three unanswered shots in overtime period number two, but Bethany managed to hang around until the 104th minute when it drew a foul in the 18-yard box. That set the Green and White for a game-winning penalty kick that allowed the Bison to pull out an improbable victory.

The final statistics of the day reinforce the improbability of Bethany's victory, as Waynesburg held an unbelievable 30-4 advantage in total shots and a 14-3 edge in shots on goal. The Jackets also attempted 11 corner kicks, while Bethany tried just four.

Waynesburg will try to rebound from another heart-breaking setback on Wednesday, when it heads to Washington & Jefferson. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
