Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer plays to 1-1 tie at W&J

Jackets earn draw at Washington

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 16) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team traveled to Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets and Presidents battled through 90 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, before ending the evening in a 1-1 draw.

Junior Jill Moyer (Cressona, Pa. / Blue Mountain) not only opened the game's scoring with a tally in the 12th minute, but she ended a lengthy goalless drought for Waynesburg (2-9-2, 0-2-2). The Yellow Jackets last found the back of the net against W&J (3-7-3, 1-0-3) with 13:13 remaining in a 3-3 tie back in 2014. Moyer's tally ended a 385:47 run of shutout soccer for the Jackets against the Presidents.

The home team posted the equalizer in the 38th minute to bring about the eventual final score.

Not surprisingly, many of the game's final statistics reflected a closely contested 110 minutes of play between the league and geographic rivals. W&J outshot Waynesburg 20-14 on the night, but the shots on goal were of a tighter 9-7 margin. Each squad attempted five corner kicks. The Jackets committed nine fouls, while the Presidents recorded eight.

Senior Christina Golonka (Burgettstown, Pa. / Madonna) tied with sophomore Leesha Wagner (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) for the team lead with three total shots. All three of Golonka's shots were on net, while Wagner put two on goal.

Freshman Autumn Blair (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) played all 110 minutes in goal and stopped seven-of-eight shots on net.

Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when Westminster comes to John F. Wiley Stadium for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
