Volleyball suffers heart breaker against Chatham

Waynesburg jumps out to 2-0 lead before falling 3-2 to Cougars

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 24) – The Waynesburg University team looked primed and ready to roll to its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win of the season on Thursday night. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead over visiting Chatham, but saw the lead fade away before the night ended with a gut punch in set five that concluded a heart-breaking 3-2 loss.

Waynesburg (3-20, 0-12) cruised to a 25-17 victory in set one. Set two, on the other hand, was more of a back-and-forth affair that was tied at 21-21. The Yellow Jackets finished strong by taking four of the last five points and winning the set 25-22.

Chatham (7-16, 3-10) controlled the third set from start-to-finish to cut its deficit down to 2-1. Set four saw the two conference opponents play to a 14-14 tie, before the Cougars scored seven-straight points and built a 21-14 advantage. The visitors went on to tie the match with a 25-17 win.

Things started well in set five, as Waynesburg built multiple four-point advantages, including a 9-5 lead. The Cougars answered by tallying six of the next seven points and jumping ahead 11-10. The home team battled back to tie the score at 14-14. A long night ended sourly with Chatham scoring the final match-deciding points.

Junior Hannah Colvin  (Hagerstown, Md. / Grace Academy) had a big night on the court. Waynesburg's leading attacker put down a match-high 18 kills and added 17 digs for a double-double. Senior Alyssa Proper (Titusville, Pa. / Maplewood) set the match high in assists with 27 helpers.

Waynesburg's defensive efforts were spearheaded by sophomore Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic), who put together a match-best 33 digs.

The Yellow Jackets will look to rebound for Thursday's disappointment on Saturday, when they travel to Grove City. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
