GROVE CITY, Pa. (Oct. 26) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team traveled to Grove City on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference match. After dropping the first two sets, the Yellow Jackets battled back to extend the match to a fourth. Unfortunately, the host Wolverines took that deciding set and claimed a 3-1 victory.
GCC (17-8, 7-7) built its 2-0 advantage after picking up wins of 25-11 and 25-22. The Jackets (3-21, 0-13) rebounded with a gutty 25-21 triumph in set three. Waynesburg led 14-11 in set four, but a 6-0 run by Grove City put the host squad up 17-14. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Jackets came to forcing a fifth set, as the Wolverines closed out the afternoon by taking set four 25-19.
Waynesburg was led by the junior duo of
Hannah Colvin (Hagerstown, Md. / Grace Academy) and
Mya Brooks (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) who went for 12 and nine kills, respectively. Senior
Alyssa Proper (Titusville, Pa. / Maplewood) and junior
Alexis Phillips (New Kensington, Pa. / Plum) both posted 16 assists on the day.
The Jacket defense featured three players combining for 45 digs. Colvin led the way with 16, giving her a double-double on the day, while sophomore
Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic) chipped in 15. Brooks added 14 digs, seeing her just come up short of a double-double of her own.
Waynesburg returns home on Tuesday, for a PAC matchup with Saint Vincent. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
