Women's Soccer rolls past Thiel

Yellow Jackets shut out Tomcats 3-0 on senior night

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 26) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team celebrated senior day on Saturday night by hosting Thiel in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets honored its six seniors in winning fashion by shutting out the Tomcats 3-0.

With the win, the Jackets (4-10-2, 2-3-2) kept its hopes for the four-team PAC tournament with the victory. Waynesburg is now one point out of the fourth-and-final postseason spot.

The Orange and Black dominated Thiel (6-10, 1-5), outshooting the Tomcats 19-6 and holding an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. Waynesburg attempted five corner kicks, while Thiel didn't get one attempt from the corner flags.

It did not take long for the Jackets to tally the eventual game-winning goal. Shortly after being recognized before the game, senior Christina Golonka (Burgettstown, Pa. / Madonna) took a ricocheted ball off the opposing keeper and buried it in the back of the net 1:01 into the game.

Thiel kept the difference at one goal throughout the remainder of the first half. Waynesburg's constant pressure finally broke through for an insurance tally in the 58th minute when Golonka set up sophomore Leesha Wagner (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) to make the score 2-0. It was Wagner's fifth score of the season, which leads the Jackets.

The Jackets closed out the scoring late in the 69th minute, when junior Jessica Silbaugh (South Riding, Va. / Freedom) cashed in on a corner kick by junior Maddy Manz (Cecil, Pa. / Canon-McMillan).

Freshman goalkeeper Autumn Blair (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) started and picked up the victory after making one save over 76:44. She was lifted in the 76th minute and freshman Kennedy Schuck (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta) closed out the shutout with two saves over the final 13:16.

Waynesburg closes out the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 29, with a home game against Geneva. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
