Volleyball battles a tough Westminster squad

Yellow Jackets win the opening set, but fall 3-1 to the Titans

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 5) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team traveled to Westminster on Saturday to take on one of the top teams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The Yellow Jackets made a strong opening statement by taking the first set of the day. Unfortunately, the Titans bounced back to sweep sets two, three and four and claim victory.

Waynesburg (2-13, 0-5) gutted out a 25-23 win in sent number one. Westminster (16-1, 5-0) rebounded by sweeping the final three games by the scores of 25-8, 25-19 and 25-17.

The Jacket offense was paced by junior Hannah Colvin (Hagerstown, Md. / Grace Academy), who powered down a match-high 11 kills. Senior Alyssa Proper (Titusville, Pa. / Maplewood) was outstanding at the setter spot as she racked up a contest-best 26 assists.

The Waynesburg defensive effort was led by Colvin and sophomore Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic). Colvin completed a double-double with 16 digs, while Johnson matched her for the team lead. Junior Mya Brooks (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) nearly had a double-double of her own with nine kills and 12 digs.

Johnson tied for the match lead with three aces.

Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, when it welcomes Grove City to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhosue. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
