SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 20) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team traveled to Division II Shippensburg for a Wednesday night match. The Yellow Jackets fell 35-12 to the Raiders.
Waynesburg (1-2) opened up a 6-0 lead when freshman
Brenden Hanning (Washington, Pa. / Washington) picked up a forfeit at 125 pounds. Shippensburg answered with 21 points over the next four weights to take a 21-6 lead.
Senior
Zach Mackall (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) got the Jackets back on the winning track with a 7-2 decision at 165 pounds. Following a Shippensburg win at 174, senior
Dillion Charlton (Stoystown, Pa. / North Star) picked up Waynesburg's final win of the night, downing his opponent 7-3 at 184 pounds.
Though they suffered defeat, Waynesburg freshmen
Colby Morris (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) and
Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) both went a full seven minutes against arguably the two best wrestlers in the Raider lineup.
Morris suffered his first loss of the season to Pat Duggan, who has spent time on the teams at West Virginia University, Lock Haven and the University of Iowa before suiting up for the Raiders. McGeary faced off with Derek Berberick, the number-five heavyweight in Division II, and yielded just a 6-0 decision.
Waynesburg is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 24, when the Jackets compete in the John Carroll Duals. The first of three matches on the day is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m.
