Waynesburg women down Houghton

Yellow Jackets use big night at the free throw line to power 70-61 win

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 22) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Houghton for a Friday night game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets used a strong second half to expand their two-point halftime lead into a 70-61 victory over the Highlanders.

Waynesburg (1-3) attacked the basket early and often to draw 28 fouls that were converted into 28 free throws. The Yellow Jackets connected on 22 of those foul shots. Houghton (1-5) hit on just 11-of-17 tries from the charity stripe. That difference at the line played a major role in the Jacket victory.

Junior Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) and senior Erin Joyce (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) both went eight-for-10 at the foul line. Orlosky and Joyce ended the night with 14 and eight points, respectively. Freshman Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) contributed 13 points and six rebounds to the winning effort.

The Yellow Jackets boasted a third double-digit scorer in sophomore Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton), who set team highs in both points (15) and rebounds (nine). Freshman Zoie Smith (Berlin, Pa. / Berlin Brothersvalley) chipped in nine points off the bench.

The game proved to be a chippy one as five players, including four from Houghton, fouled out before the conclusion of the contest.

The Highlanders opened the game with a 12-7 lead, before heading into the first quarter break up 14-11. Their advantage grew to as large as seven points (24-17) in the second quarter. However, the Jackets bounced back to outscore the opposition 13-4 over the remainder of the first half and took a 30-28 edge into the locker room.

Back-to-back baskets by Orlosky and Fuller stretched the Orange and Black lead to six points in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The home team never trailed for the remainder of the contest and led 55-47 at the end of the period.

To its credit, Houghton battled back with a 7-0 start to the fourth-and final quarter and trailed the Jackets by a single point at 55-54. Once again, it was Orlosky and Fuller keeping their team ahead, this time by combining for five points and rebuilding a multi-basket Waynesburg lead (60-54). The Jackets pulled ahead by as many as 12 points, before putting the game away for good.
