GAMBIER, Ohio (Nov. 23) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team traveled to Kenyon for a Saturday non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets dropped an 80-61 final score to the Lords.
Sophomore
Isaiah Alonzo (Chandler, Ariz. / Tri-City Christian Academy) put together his most efficient offensive effort as a Yellow Jacket. He poured in a game-high 23 points on six-of-eight shooting from the floor. He was also successful on all 10 of his free throw attempts. Alonzo added a team-high five rebounds to his day.
The Jackets added a double-digit scoring performance from senior
Brennan Smith (New Cumberland, W.Va. / Oak Glen). Smith tallied 12 points while making four-of-nine field goal attempts and three-of-six foul shots. The veteran standout also handed out a squad-best four assists.
Kenyon (2-2) got off to a fast start while it built a 9-2 advantage. The Lords' lead grew to as large as 16 points (42-26), before settling into a 42-28 advantage at halftime. The Jackets battled throughout the second half and pulled to with nine points (62-53) with 7:39 left to play. Unfortunately, that's as close as the visiting team came to completing the comeback on the day.
Though it didn't lead to victory, Waynesburg continued its early season trend of getting to the free throw line early and often. The Yellow Jackets made 19-of-25 foul shots, while Kenyon connected on 13-of-18 free throws.
The Jackets return home on Tuesday, Nov. 26, when they host Otterbein. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
