GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Dec. 14) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team wrapped up the 2019 calendar year on Saturday with a trip to the Long Island Open, which was hosted by Nassau Community College. Freshman Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) won his second individual title in as many attempts to pace eight total place winners for the Orange and Black.

McGeary went 4-0 with a pin and a major decision to add to his personal trophy collection. He grabbed the gold medal by defeating Maguire Horl of Division I LIU Post in the finals. McGeary outlasted Horl to win a 3-2 decision in double-overtime to claim the crown.

The Yellow Jackets had a second finalist in senior 184-pounder Dillion Charlton (Stoystown, Pa. / North Star). Charlton advanced to the championship bout after going 3-0 with a trio of decision victories. The last of those three came by a 5-3 score against senior teammate Dan Verhovsek (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland). Unfortunately, Charlton wound up on the wrong end of a 5-1 decision in the championship tilt.

Verhovsek was joined by fellow senior Caleb Baxter (Butler, Pa. / Butler) as a fourth-place performer on the day. Baxter picked up back-to-back decisions to reach the semifinals at 174 pounds, but dropped a heart-breaking 4-2 to fall into consolations. He took a medial forfeit in the bronze medal match.

Junior Josh Kuslock (Hickory, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) and senior Zach Mackall (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) placed fifth at 149 and 165 pounds, respectively. Kuslock went 5-1 on the day and won four-straight bouts in consolations to close his tournament. He scored one pin, two major decisions and a technical fall throughout a grueling day on the mats. Mackall opened his tournament with a pin before falling into wrestle-backs, where he rolled through three more victories by fall.

Seniors Matt Lascola (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Langley) and Adam Rigney (Mount Union, Pa. / Mount Union) chipped in sixth-place finishes at 141 and 197 pounds respectively.

The Jackets are off until Jan. 4, when they host their annual Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
