WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 16) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Presidents' Athletic Conference-leading Westminster Monday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets kept within striking distance of an upset for a majority of the contest, but ultimately fell to the Titans 81-69.
Westminster (9-0, 3-0) opened up the game on a 14-2 run before settling for a 15-6 edge by the end of the first quarter. Waynesburg (1-7, 0-3) continued to battle throughout the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 22-20 with just over two minutes remaining in the half. However, the Titans reversed their fortunes to take a 29-21 advantage into the locker room.
The Yellow Jackets continued keeping pace with the Titans throughout the third quarter. Despite trailing by 13 points with three minutes remaining in the third, an 8-0 run brought the Yellow Jackets back to within five points, 49-44, with around 1:30 to go thanks to a pair of free throws from freshman point guard
Anika Dansby (Massillon, Ohio / Washington) and back-to-back three-pointers from senior guard
Alli DeLaney (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local) and sophomore guard
Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park).
That was as close as the comeback attempt came, though, as Westminster built leads as large as 16 points before the game came to its 81-69 final.
Five different Yellow Jackets reached double-digits in scoring in the contest, with junior guard
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) leading the way with 16. Sophomore center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) and freshman forward
Zoie Smith (Berlin, Pa. / Berlin Brothersvalley) each recorded double-doubles with 10 points and 10 rebounds apiece, while DeLaney finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Kastroll added 11 points on four-of-eight shooting, including three-of-five from three-point range.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Thursday, Dec. 19, when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Carnegie Mellon in a non-conference matchup. First tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
