PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Dec. 19) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Carnegie Mellon Thursday afternoon for a non-conference contest. The Yellow Jackets were unable to overcome a 20-10 first quarter deficit and fell to the Tartans 77-56.
Despite coming in a losing effort, sophomore center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) managed to score a career-high 23 points on 11-18 shooting from the field, while also connecting on her lone free throw attempt. Fuller also had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with three assists on the afternoon.
Senior guard
Alli DeLaney (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local) was the only other Yellow Jacket to score double-digit points, coming off the bench to connect on four-of-10 treys to give her 12 points. Sophomore guard
Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) also produced off the bench, tallying six points and seven rebounds.
Waynesburg (1-8) and Carnegie Mellon (5-4) traded baskets over the first two minutes, with Waynesburg ending that stretch with a 7-6 lead. That was the Yellow Jackets' final lead of the afternoon. The Tartans then went on a 16-3 run that carried into the second quarter.
Entering halftime, the Yellow Jackets still found themselves in a 10-point deficit, 33-23. However, a 10-2 run to open the third quarter brought Waynesburg back to within two points, 35-33, but a 13-0 run by Carnegie Mellon just after that effectively put the game out of reach for the Orange and Black as the Tartans rolled until the final buzzer.
The Lady Jackets will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 21, in another non-conference matchup, this time against Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
