Women's hoops opens PAC play

Jackets battle, but big Grove City run leads to Wolverine victory

GROVE CITY, Pa. (Dec. 4) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday with a road trip to Grove City. The Yellow Jackets trailed by just five points at halftime and were tied early in the third quarter. Unfortunately, a big run by the Wolverines in that same period allowed them to pull away for a 77-56 win.

Waynesburg (1-5, 0-1) was led offensively by sophomore center Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton), who poured in a team-high 16 points on seven-of-10 shooting from the floor. Fuller was also a defensive force in the paint as she blocked a game-high five shots. Freshman Zoie Smith (Berlin, Pa. / Berlin Brothersvalley) added 13 points on six-of-nine shooting and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds over 31 productive minutes on the floor.

As previously mentioned, the game's final outcome was ultimately determined in the third quarter. A Smith layup pulled Waynesburg to within one point of the lead (46-45) with just under seven minutes remaining in the period. Unfortunately for the visitors, Grove City (7-0, 1-0) responded with a 16-0 run that spanned nearly the entire remainder of the quarter. Smith stopped the surge with a layup to close the third, but as the game moved to the fourth, the Wolverines held a 62-47 advantage.

The home team closed out the victory by outscoring Waynesburg 15-9 over the final 10 minutes of play.

The host squad held sizeable advantages in rebounding (48-33) and turnovers (26-14) that seriously hindered Waynesburg's changes at victory. The Jackets held a slight edge in field goal percentage (42% to 37.8%), but the Wolverines attempted 24 more shots on the night.

Waynesburg is back in action Saturday, when it travels to Chatham for another PAC contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
