HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 2) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2018-19 schedule on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets faced Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Saint Vincent in a tightly contested non-league match that ended in a 5-4 win for the Bearcats.
The Yellow Jackets (3-2) got off to a great start by sweeping the day's three doubles matches. Seniors
Jonah Cooper (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Beaver County Christian) and
Josh Denham (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) teamed up to score an 8-4 win at the number-one flight.
Freshmen
Conor Cassidy (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) and
Joe English (Smithfield, Pa. / Homeschooled) grabbed their first win of the spring by 8-6 final score at second doubles. Seniors
Tanner McKnight (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) and
Brian Drake (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mount Lebanon) completed the sweep with a tightly contested 8-7 (5) triumph at the number-three spot.
Unfortunately, the Bearcats were victorious in five-of-six singles flights to earn the match win. English completed a 2-0 day by claiming a victory at third singles 6-4, 6-3.
Waynesburg will take to the courts one last time in Hilton Head on Monday, when it faces Penn State Harrisburg. Start time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
