HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 4) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring on Monday. The Yellow Jackets defeated Penn State Harrisburg 5-3 in its second-and-final spring break contest.
Seniors
Jonah Cooper (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Beaver County Christian) and
Josh Denham (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) got things going with an 8-6 victory at first doubles. The Lions (5-2) battled back to take the other two doubles wins of the day.
Cooper and Denham got the comeback rolling for Waynesburg (4-2) with straight-set wins at first and second singles, respectively. Freshman
Conor Cassidy (Huntintown, Md. / Huntingtown) scored a crucial 6-4, 5-7, 11-9 victory at the number-four spot. Sophomore
Brett Thumm (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) clinched the triumph on the day by downing his opponent at number-six singles 6-3, 5-7, 11-9.
Waynesburg returns to action on Friday, March 15, when they take on another Penn State branch. The Jackets head to Penn State Altoona that day for a 4 p.m. contest.
