MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 8) – The Waynesburg University softball team logged its first win of the season as part of an extremely Friday at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Yellow Jackets put together three solid showings against the Wentworth Institute of Technology, Coe, which is ranked ninth in the country, and Hilbert.
Waynesburg (1-4) started the day with an 8-5 loss to the Wentworth Institute of Technology (4-5) and followed that up with an inspired effort against Coe (13-0), which saw the Jackets drop a 4-0 final score. The Yellow Jackets finally broke through for their first win of the season by besting Hilbert (4-5) 4-2.
The victory over the Hawks was the first for new head coach

Junior
Ashley Dubovich (New Salem, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) was a one-woman wrecking crew at the plate. She went seven-for-seven over three starts with two doubles and a walk. Dubovich logged one RBI and one run scored. She also played flawless defense with 11 assists and four putouts.
Senior pitcher
Courtney Messenger (East Liverpool, Ohio / Beaver Local), who is entering her fourth year as the number-one starter in the circle, made her season debut by appearing in all three games, including two starts. She went 1-2 and tallied 17 total innings. Messenger walked just one while recording seven strikeouts.
Waynesburg wraps up its spring break trip with three more games tomorrow. The Jackets open with Guilford at 11:30 a.m., followed by West Virginia Tech at 1:30 p.m. The Orange and Black conclude the southern swing with a game against Centenary.
