GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 9) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Grove City for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets dropped both ends of the twin bill to the host Wolverines.
Waynesburg (14-14, 8-6) suffered a 17-7 loss in game one. Grove City (17-9, 7-3) led 5-0 after two innings, but the Yellow Jackets broke up the shutout in the top of the third frame with a two-spot.
The home team put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning with five tallies that made the score 10-2. Waynesburg took another shot at a comeback by tallying three runs in the fourth. Unfortunately, GCC again had a response, this time scoring five times in the fifth and twice more in the sixth.
Senior
Brandon Lawless (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) started and suffered the loss on the mound. He was the first of four pitchers used in the opener and allowed four runs in his only inning of work.
Game two was much more competitive and saw the Jackets hang with the Wolverines over nine innings. However, the four runs posted by the Red and White over the first two innings held up in a 4-2 triumph.
The biggest highlight of game two for the visiting squad was senior leftfielder
Tyler Godwin (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) launching his first homerun of the season that brought about the eventual final score.
Waynesburg also got its best pitching performance of the day from senior
Nate Gearhart (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon). Gearhart gave up no runs on just two hits and two walks over five outstanding innings of relief. He tallied a pair of strikeouts on the day.
Gearhart came in after sophomore
Zach Straub (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park), who started and suffered the loss after allowing four runs over two innings. Senior
Colton Uzzell (Fairfax, Va. / Bishop O'Connell) logged a scoreless frame in the bottom of the eighth.
Waynesburg will try and return to the win column on Friday, April 12, when it travels to Westminster to play a PAC doubleheader with the Titans. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
