WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 14) – The Waynesburg University baseball team secured two important Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) wins when it hosted Westminster on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets swept the doubleheader with the Titans by the final scores of 2-0 and 12-5.
With the sweep, Waynesburg (16-14, 10-6) maintained its hold on fourth place in the conference standings. The top four teams in the league qualify for the championship tournament. Westminster dropped to 10-15 overall and 5-8 against conference opposition.
Junior
Mason Miller (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) did little to tarnish his reputation as one of, if not the top pitcher in the PAC in game one. He allowed just one hit, a second-inning single, to the visiting squad. Miller piled up nine strikeouts and walked three. He lowered his league-best ERA to 1.61, while his 69 strikeouts are also tops in the PAC.
Waynesburg got the only run it needed for the win in the fourth thanks to the heads-up base running of senior third baseman
Tyler Reis (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills) and junior catcher John Przbylinski (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville). Przbylinski got caught in a pickoff situation at first, but managed to stay in it long enough to allow Reis to sprint home with the game's first score.
Reis scored the game's only other run in the sixth when senior centerfielder
Mitch Nordstrom (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) grounded out to first.
After the two teams combined for five hits, all singles, in game one, the two offenses took center stage and produced some big innings in Waynesburg's second win of the day. The Jackets scored four times in the first, five times in the fourth and three times in the eighth. Westminster plated a pair of runs in the eighth. They logged a score in the first, fourth and sixth.
Reis teed off on his second home run of the year, a two-run bomb, in the eighth to highlight his team's 14-hit performance. Junior first baseman
Jonny Kutchman (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) posted an RBI on a single and a double in the late contest.
All that offensive support backed up senior
Ty Wickline (Clarksburg, W.Va. / Liberty), who improved to 4-2 on the year after putting up six innings of three-run baseball. He allowed 10 hits, but didn't' walk a batter.
Senior
Colton Uzzell (Fairfax, Va. / Bishop O'Connell), senior
Nate Gearhart (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon) and sophomore
Tyler Srbinovich (Warren, Ohio / Niles McKinley) combined to work the final three innings out of the bullpen.
Senior leftfielder
Tyler Godwin (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) continued his recent hot hitting by going three-for-three with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Kutchman, Nordstrom and junior second baseman
Justin Buberl (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) chipped in two hits each to the winning effort.
Waynesburg heads outside the PAC for its next two competition dates. The Yellow Jackets travel to La Roche for a 4 p.m. Wednesday doubleheader. The Jackets come back home to tangle with former conference foe Thomas More on Saturday.
