Box Score NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 16) – The Waynesburg University baseball team continued its push towards a playoff berth in the highly competitive Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) when it traveled to Westminster on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets used a big fifth inning and solid pitching to defeat the Titans 8-2.
With the win, Waynesburg (17-14, 11-6) jumped into third place in the PAC standings. The top four squads qualify for the league championship tournament. The loss dropped Westminster to 10-16 overall and 5-9 in league play. Tuesday's victory gave the Jackets their third season sweep of the 2019 season, their most since logging four sweeps since 2016.
After neither team scored in the first two innings, senior leftfielder
Tyler Godwin (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) opened the scoring by lifting a sacrifice fly into centerfield that allowed junior second baseman
Justin Buberl (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) to sprint home from third base.
Westminster answered with scores in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead against junior starting pitcher
Jonny Kutchman (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland). The one-run deficit didn't seem to bother the visiting team, which had a big answer waiting for the Blue and White in its half of the sixth.
With senior third baseman
Tyler Reis (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills) and Godwin standing on third and second, respectively, junior catcher John Przbylinski tied the game with an RBI single. After Westminster logged the second out of the inning, senior centerfielder
Mitch Nordstrom (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Sophomore right fielder
Tyler Srbinovich (Warren, Ohio \ Niles McKinley) legged out an infield single to give Waynesburg a 3-2 edge. A throwing error on the same play plated another Jacket run that made the score 4-2. After senior shortstop
Alec Fantaskey (Williamsport, Pa. / Williamsport) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Buberl drew a walk that sent Nordstrom trotting home with his team's fifth run.
Reis came up with the big hit of the inning in the next at-bat with a two-run single that made the score 7-2. The Titans were able to finally tally the third out in the top of the sixth, but the damage was already done. The Jackets scored the game's final run in the seventh when Srbinovich singled home senior first baseman
Jordan Kowalski (Butler, Pa. / Knoch). From there, a combination of the Yellow Jacket defense and bullpen sealed up the team's latest victory.
Senior
Colton Uzzell (Fairfax, Va. / Bishop O'Connell) finished up 2.1 innings of scoreless relief before turning the ball over to Srbinovic to open the bottom of the eighth. The second-year righty closed out the day by giving up one hit over the final two frames. He and Uzzell, who picked up the win on the mound, combined to give up just three hits and one walk over 4.1 innings of work.
Eight members of Waynesburg's starting lineup picked up at least one hit during a balanced Jacket attack. Reis and Srbinovic collected two knocks and two RBI each on the day.
The Jackets return to non-PAC action on Saturday, April 20, when former league member Thomas More comes to town for a seven-inning doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
