Men's tennis pulls out road victory

Waynesburg downs Penn State Altoona 5-4

ALTOONA, Pa. (April 12) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team traveled to the Summit Tennis and Athletic Club on Friday for its final non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match of the season. The Yellow Jackets battled Penn State Altoona in a highly competitive match. By the time the final point was scored, Waynesburg found itself on the right end of a 5-4 final score.

The Yellow Jackets' (8-4) solid doubles play continued against the Lions (2-13), as the visitors took two-of-three flights. Seniors Jonah Cooper (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Beaver County Christian) and Josh Denham (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) improved to 10-2 on the season by notching another victory at the number-one spot. The pair defeated their opponents 8-5.

Freshman Joe English (Smithfield, Pa. / Homeschooled) and Conor Cassidy (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) followed at second doubles with an 8-5 triumph of their own. It was nearly a clean sweep for Waynesburg, but junior Tanner McKnight (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) and senior Brian Drake (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mount Lebanon) came up just short, 8-6 in the number-three spot.

Altoona gained some ground with three singles wins, but the Jackets did just enough to secure their latest victory. English notched a straight-set victory at third singles and was followed by Cassidy pulling out a 6-2, 2-6, 12-10 marathon at the number-four spot. Drake clinched the win for his team at fifth singles with a 6-0, 6-4 victory.

Waynesburg now turns its attention to the final two PAC contests of the season. The Jackets travel to Washington & Jefferson tomorrow to face the Presidents. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
