GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 14) – The Waynesburg University softball team traveled to Thiel on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with the Tomcats. After fall 8-0 in game one, the Yellow Jackets took an early lead in game two, but fell 4-2.
Senior
Courtney Messenger (East Liverpool, Ohio / Beaver Local) suffered the loss in the circle of game one after yielding six earned runs over a five-inning complete game. She struck out three and didn't walk an opposing hitter.
Game two saw Thiel (13-19, 7-3) take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, before Waynesburg (6-20, 2-8) rebounded with its first two scores of the day in the top of the third. Junior third baseman
Cheyenne Wasko (Brownsville, Pa. / Brownsville) singled in junior catcher
Rachel Skon (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear) to tie the game before sophomore right fielder
Marlee Ott (Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) legged out an infield single that brought Skon in from third.
Unfortunately, the Tomcats fired right back with a two-spot of their own in the bottom of the third to move ahead 3-2. Thiel tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth that closed the scoring.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the afternoon. However, Waynesburg put itself in position to extend the game into the bottom of the seventh when senior first baseman
Alex Lawrence (Bridgeville, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) led off the final inning with a double. Wasko followed with a single that put runners on the corners, but Thiel managed to keep the visiting team off the scoreboard to close out the victory.
Sophomore
Emma Kubalak (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley) pitched well enough to win after giving up two earned runs over six innings. She allowed 10 hits, but was hurt by a pair of errors, both of which resulted in unearned runs.
Lawrence and Wasko paced the Waynesburg offense by collecting five and four hits, respectively on the day.
The Jackets are back in action on Monday, when they host Geneva for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
