WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 3) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team hosted Thiel on Wednesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match. The Yellow Jackets not only picked up their first conference win of the season, but did so in 9-0 shutout fashion.
Seniors
Jonah Cooper (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Beaver County Christian) and
Josh Denham (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) teamed up for an 8-2 win at first doubles. Freshmen
Joe English (Smithfield, Pa. / Home Schooled) and
Conor Cassidy (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) added an 8-1 triumph at second doubles. The Jackets' (5-3, 1-1) toughest win of the day was decided at third doubles, where seniors
Brian Drake (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) and
Tanner McKnight won in tiebreaker at the number-three spot.
Cooper, Denham, English, Cassidy, Drake and sophomore
Brett Thumm (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) all added straight-set victories in singles competition to complete the sweep.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, April 6, when it is scheduled to host Westminster for a PAC meeting. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
