Men's tennis picks up senior day victory

Waynesburg defeats Westminster 7-2

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 6) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team hosted Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Westminster on Saturday to celebrate senior day. All four Yellow Jacket seniors played a role in the Yellow Jackets' 7-2 victory over the Titans.

Waynesburg (6-3, 2-1) got the match off to a positive start by winning two-of-three doubles flights. Seniors Jonah Cooper (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Beaver County Christian) and Josh Denham (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) rolled to an impressive 8-0 win at the number-one spot.

After freshman Joe English (Smithfield, Pa. / Homeschooled) and sophomore Conor Cassidy (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) came up just short in an 8-7 match at second doubles, junior Tanner McKnight (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) and senior Brian Drake (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mount Lebanon) downed their number-three doubles opponents 8-2.

Denham, English, Cassidy and Drake all completed 2-0 days with singles victories, the first three coming in straight sets. Senior Brett Thumm (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) put the finishing touches on the win with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-2, 10-6 triumph at the number-six spot.

The Jackets travel to Grove City on Tuesday, April 9, for a conference match. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
